Monthly Educational Program

Through monthly seminars led by both established experts and emerging leaders in glomerulonephritis, the program brings together nephrologists, internists, and pathologists from across the region to discuss cases and topics, with a focus on the unique challenges and issues in glomerular diseases tailored to practicing Arabic-speaking nephrologists in the area.

GlomCon Arabia Leadership

Dr. Mohamed Hassanein is a Consultant Nephrologist and Glomerular Disease Specialist based in Alexandria, Egypt. His clinical focus includes complex glomerular diseases and onconephrology.

Clinical Focus and Research: 

Dr. Hassanein’s clinical focus and research includes glomerular diseases and onconephrology. He has over 130 peer-reviewed publications, including original manuscripts, review articles, case reports, book chapters, and abstracts. 

Training and Academic Experience:

  • Dr. Hassanein completed his Internal Medicine residency at Michigan State University, where he was awarded the Outstanding Resident of the Year in Nephrology and the David Greenbaum Emerging Leader Awards.  

  • He completed his Nephrology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the USA, where he was awarded the Research Fellow of the Year Award.

  • He is an alumnus of the inaugural class of GlomCon’s Glomerular Disease Fellowship and has since served as a core faculty member of the program.

  • Before returning to Egypt, he worked for three years as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where the Department of Medicine awarded him the Mentoring Award of 2024.

Dr. Salem Almaani is the director of the Cleveland Clinic Glomerulonephritis Center.

Clinical Focus and Research:

Dr. Almaani's research is dedicated to advancing the understanding of glomerulonephritis through the use of multi-omics to identify disease pathways contributing to its pathogenesis.

Training and Education:

  • He completed his nephrology training at the Ohio State University, followed by Glomerulonephritis fellowships at the Ohio State University and the University of Toronto. 

  • Before joining the Cleveland Clinic, he was an Associate Professor and Vasculitis Clinic Lead at the Ohio State University, where he also founded the Kidney Disease in Pregnancy Clinic.

  • His research focuses on the use of multi-omics to understand disease pathways contributing to the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis.
